Before we show the list of 150 countries with the lowest homicide rates here is a world overview:

From this it’s clear the most dangerous countries lie predominately in South America and Africa. This can be expected due to the poorer economies economies in these continents. Now here is the full list of the 150 safest countries according to homicide rates. These rates come from data collected by UNODC. From this list come several surprises, one of which is America’s ranking. I think we all know there’s a lot of crime in the U.S, but who expected it to be so bad that they are down at 108th for safety by homicide rates. Another surprise is how well Japan ranks. For those that don’t know Japan holds one of the largest and deadliest gangs in the world in the Yakuza, because of this you would expect high homicide rates but that assumption is obviously not rightfully made.

Most people would have expected the top 3 to be Monaco, Andorra and San Marino as these 3 countries have small populations and are widely considered tax havens.

  1. Gundu Reddy says:

It is unfortunate despite economic success that US does not rank top 150 and counties such as Egypt, Syria , Peru, Ghana and Sierra Leone are actually safer.

Most violence in the US is gang violence but easy accessibility to guns and cultural acceptance of firearms appears to be a factor .
